The Arkansas Black is an old-time apple variety, discovered in 1870, known for its very dark, almost black skin when fully mature. It has a distinctive tart flavor and is versatile for many culinary uses. Harvest typically occurs in late September or early October. Similar to the Jonagold, it has sterile pollen and requires pollination from preferably two other apple cultivars to set fruit.
